Le fort romain de Melandra, également connu sous son nom latin d'Ardotalia, a été établi au premier siècle de notre ère comme l'un d'un réseau d'avant-postes qui reliait Manchester au réseau routier plus large. Il a ensuite été reconstruit en pierre mais a probablement été abandonné au milieu du IIe siècle après JC.
