Annotations

The city of Karkar (Arabic Karkarah) is said to have been built in c. 540 by the Sasanid King of Kings Khusraw II Anushirwan as a stronghold for the Persian position in Armenia. The site is located between the old and new highways connecting Stepanakert and Shusha and has been damaged by the passage of a pipeline between them. The ruins were used as a source for stone by the inhabitants of Shusha to the south. Part of the site is obscured by vegetation.
