Annotations

Roman-era workshops (cetariae) likely for producing garum (fermented fish sauce) and salted fish. It is highly likely that some of the shallower vats were also used as salt pans (salinae) to produce the salt required for the preservation process. The site consists of numerous tanks and vats carved into the coastal rock east of the main bay. Locally known as "Αρχαία Εργαστήρια Ματάλων".
