Annotations

Tenochtitlan was a major Mexica city-state located on an island in Lake Texcoco, in what is now the center of Mexico City. Traditionally founded in 1325, it became the capital of the Aztec Empire in the 15th century and was the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas. In 1521, it was conquered by the Spanish and their Tlaxcalan allies. The ruins lie in today’s historic center, and the nearby Xochimilco area preserves parts of the original lake landscape. Tenochtitlan shared the island with its sister city, Tlatelolco.
