El Castillo (Spanish for "the Castle") is the conventional name for the most emblematic Maya structure, the Temple of Kukulcán in Chichen Itza. Like other Mesoamerican pyramids, the temple was built in several successive stages, each adding to and expanding the preceding one in volume and height. The last stage is dated tentatively to AD 900/1000.
