Drake Winston walking along a section of the Via Raetia nestled within a forest near Klais between Partenkirchen and Mittenwald. The width of the wheel rut, 107 centimeters, corresponded to the standard for Roman mountain carts. According to an old 1994 tourist information leaflet from the Krün Tourist Office, “hidden in a wooded area, lies the only visible (albeit atypical) section of a Roman road in the Werdenfelser Land region. Researchers believe, however, that the Romans simply expanded an existing, much older path when they built the Via Raetia to Augsburg around 200 AD. Dr. Sage rejects the theory that this could be a pre-Celtic Illyrian tracked road. He believes that the ruts visible in the rock today are essentially a product of long-term use. In any case, people were already travelling through our area almost 2000 years ago. The idea that there was also a Roman military camp (clausura) in the Klais area, and that this is the origin of the place name, is purely theoretical.”
