
epiction of the figure on the right (north) side of the arcosolium at the Mithraeum of Dura-Europos, Syria (CIMRM 44.b). The figure is originally sketched (outline only) in red. Similar to the figure on the left side of the arcosolium; in Palmyrene costume, in his right hand he holds a staff, in the left a scroll. In contrast to Cumont, who supposed that this was a depiction of the mythical Ostanes (and that the other figure depicted "Zoroaster"), Rostovtzeff and E.D. Francis rationally identify the figure as a member of the mithraeum's Palmyrene congregation.
