From 120-130 CE, made of marble, from the southern gate of the Tetragonos (Commercial) Agora of Ephesus

The exceptional portrait of Emperor Hadrian was probably commissioned in connection with the statue erected to commemorate the ruler's visit to the city in 123 CE. Hadrian's characteristic hairstyle and beard follow a type named after a head now in the Museo Chiaramonti in the Vatican. The excellent condition of the surface has retained traces of the original polishing.
