This aryballos was found near the temple of Apollo and bears a unique dance scene. It depicts a piper playing a dance tune on a diaulus (double flute). Six dancers stand in pairs facing him with their arms against their sides and their knees slightly bent to the rhythm. In front of the piper, the lead dancer is jumping through the air, as is the custom even to this day in Greek folk dancing. This is the central character of the scene, as the following inscription in the Corinthian alphabet unfolds before him: “ΠΥΡFΙΑΣ ΠΡΟΧΟΡΕΥΟΜΕΝΟΣ ΑΥΤΩ ΔΕ FΟΙ ΟΛΠΑ”, which means, “Pyrvias, the lead dancer. This vase belongs to him”. The epigraph was written before the vase was fired, which reveals that it was a special order for Pyrvias, to be presented as a gift or an athletic prize.
