Accessible by a narrow steep rock-path acropolis called in antiquity Teloneia was situated on the mountain top overlooking the city and surrowndings. Fortifications date back to the city's foundation in the mid-fourth century BC. Square tower incide the walls served as a living quarters for the permanent garrison. Electred chief commander of the citadel was forbiden to leave id during his term of office1.
