Currently known as Mantova, the city is most famous as the birthplace of the poet Virgil  (Publius Vergilius Maro).

Originally an  Etruscan settlement. The name derives from the god Mantus. The city was conquered by the Romans in the third century BC. Under Augustus its territory was handed out to army veterans.
